This historical presentation, “Pre-Civil War Quilts: Their Secret Codes to Freedom on the Underground Railroad™,” is based upon Connie Martin’s mother’s book: "Lizzie’s Story: A Slave Family’s Journey to Freedom” by Dr. Clarice Boswell. Connie tells the history of the Underground Railroad, safe routes used from South to North, and stories of how the quilt codes, their meanings, and knowledge of key abolitionists that have been passed down to her, a sixth-generation descendant of captured slaves forced into slavery in America.
